Neel (April 2010 – October 2011): Nutritional Advice and Weight Loss

Neel was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at a young age and decided he wanted to do something to help manage the condition.

Programme

When Neel came to me he was 107kg, a type 1 diabetic and had been doing the same routine in the gym for months with no benefit. When we first started working togehter he was extremly reluctant to change his lifestyle, this made my job difficult as he wasn’t getting the full benefit out of his training due to this. He did however start to work on his lifetsyle and from that point he started to see results quickly.

My approach was to do high intensity workouts using resistance training so that as he lost the weight he would be increasing muscle mass at the same time. I had to be aware of his sugar levels in training and make sure we were working in the right heart rate zone to generate maximum results. When I left LA Fitness Neel was 78kg and had managed to keep his diabetes in control for the first time in years.

My journey with Gemma started in April 2010 where I weighed 102kg, and as a type 1 diabetic my main aim was to lose weight. I initially found it very hard, as I did not have the will power to continue being healthy and I did not listen to Gemma and her advice. Then during the summer months of 2010 I started to listen to her more attentively as she encouraged me to log down what I was eating. The training became more intense as I had signed up to do a mountain summer challenge for July 2011. She has been an excellent personal trainer and continued to push me towards my goals, which I never thought could have been possible last year. My diabetic control has pleased my doctors as it has been controlled the best in my 10 year history of diabetes. My last weigh in was 81.5kg.
